What we do

Light-touch Support

We provide telephone befriending and alert calls to older people. Every morning, 365 days a year, Telephone Befrienders call out to members at a pre-arranged time to check that all is well and for a good blether. We take an active interest in people and over time hope to become a good friend on the phone, someone to share a laugh with or simply be there to listen and give emotional support in difficult times.

Originally a service delivered by Glasgow City Council social work department on a small scale, we took over in 2000, launching our unique 365-day Good Morning Calls, adding Good Night Calls in 2008.

If our Good Morning Call goes unanswered and the person can't be located we will alert nominated contact persons or the emergency services to a potential health problem. Help will be sent, 365 days a year.

• Additional Good Night Calls in Winter
• Monthly social outings, our Get
 Togethers
• Pass on warnings of bogus callers from
 Police Scotland
• Connect people into their local
 communities

Where

Our Community

The Good Morning Service is available free of charge for those aged 65+ years, living in Glasgow City Council area in South Ayrshire Council area.

We want every older person in Scotland to have the opportunity to join our Good Morning community: to be connected, to be safer and to feel valued. If you would like the service in your area please contact your local councillors and MSP. Tell them about it.

"My call boosts me up and makes me want to get ready and go out even if it's just a wee walk round the shops. I've made a lot of new friends to blether to and it's a great feeling to go to bed and know if I took ill during the night you are always there to help – it's security."
Nancy, 76 years

Why

Living Independently

Knowing our light-touch telephone support is there to send help if our Good Morning Call remains unanswered gives older people confidence to live alone or as a Carer, gives reassurance and peace of mind whilst having a friend on the phone to talk to brightens the day.

"My independence means a lot to me. I can rely on a call every morning, and it makes me feel good. Being a member is helping me to live independently without fear."
Jane, 83 years

"Overall I feel a lot better and more alert. Their voices cheers me up and I do love to tell them how I'm keeping. I feel we are one with each other."
Harriet, 89 years
